Remembering My First Communion

I made my First Holy Communion in 1962.  It was at St. Mary's Church in Denville, a place where I would later marry, our family Church. My short little dress was the same dress my sister Jeanette wore, and the one my younger sister Joan would wear.  My Veil was the same as every girl in the church as that was the requirement.  It was a round headband type that stuck straight up.  I had white socks and my shiny white Easter Shoes.

My First Communion Day was bright and shiny, I was nervous, back then we had first grade boys dressed in short trousers as pages, there was great excitement and pageantry associated with the day.  My mom and dad had lunch at home, white table clothes, cold cuts on a tray, potato salad, and the biggest treat of all, cake with a cross on it.  It was a wonderful day, one I remember 55 years later.

My husband Dennis made his First Holy Communion over 60 years ago.  He was a student at St. Virgil's School, Morris Plains,  and lived right across the street on Pine Tree Lane.  He wore a White Suit, possibly of Wool, not too sure.  What is sure, it is no denying our Grandson's all look like their Pop-Pop.  This year, our oldest grandson, Patrick will receive Communion on May 7th at Our Lady of the Lake in Sparta.  We are so blessed for such happy memories. We pray our Grandchildren will have the same.
